In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a liquid-y 2D reveal or transition wipe in Cinema 4D. First I’ll go over how I used the Sketch Materials Adjustment options to create a stylized print offset look to my Sketch & Toon object. Next, I’ll cover how I used a 3D gradient to create the 2D wipe transition as well as going over a little Xpresso to be able to control the gradient wipe with a pair of Nulls. Finally, I will briefly go over how I used Sketch & Toon Opacity options to fade on strokes over time.
Huge thanks to Tieh-Fei Yu for donating his shoe model that I used in this tutorial!

Really cool technique, but I’m not having any luck getting the alpha material to act as a reveal for the underlying material. Followed the tutorial exactly, and turned off shading/bg in Sketch and Toon settings. My object doesn’t even get the black material applied when I turn off transparency. Are there any other settings that would prevent this from working? Lights, renderer, anything? Thanks.
Only thing I can think of is the S&T Shading & BKG options set to OFF. That’s the key. Other than that you must be missing one of the channels (Transparency & Alpha) or steps that I went over in the tutorial.
You applied the Alpha material tag to the right of the main material on your object? You need to make sure the materials are applied to every single piece of geometry, not just the parent Null.
Figured it out… it was the projection mapping on the material tag. It needs to be changed from the default to Flat. Maybe I missed that part in the video.
Interesting. In my example I used UVW mapping and it worked fine. Might want to play around with the Space options in the Gradient and see if anything works. You shouldn’t need to use Flat projection to get it to work.
It helped me
I had the same problem, but what EJ said about the S&T background fixed it.
You’re a genius!
Not by a long shot but I appreciate the kind words! :)
