In this tutorial, I’m going to introduce you to the world of rigging in Cinema 4D by showing you a workflow I use to easily create a simple cartoonish arm & leg IK rig. Normal IK rigs bend sharp at the elbow and knees of characters but it’s hard to get a smooth bend like a cartoon character. First, I’ll start out by introducing you the two types of rigs, FK (Forward Kinematics) and IK (Inverse Kinematics). Then I’ll demonstrate how I set up my simple IK rig to rig my hamburger characters arms & legs and connecting them to the body. Finally, I’ll wrap up the tutorial by showing you how to use Pose Morph to animate your character. If you’re not familiar with Pose Morph, be sure to check out my tutorial on how I used it to animate Baymax from Big Hero 6! Want to see more character animation tutorials or more rigging? Let me know by posting in the comments!
And as always, if you have any questions, be sure to post it in the comments section and if you create anything cool using this technique, be sure to share it with me! Thanks for watching!

how did you rig his mouth? A mouth rigging tutorial for 3D mouths would be awesome!
Good idea! I’ll do a tutorial on that in the near future! Thanks!
awesome tutorial EJ thank you
Exactly what I needed! Thank you EJ for taking my tut suggestions on board! You legend!
excelente e impresionante… maestro¡¡¡¡
Thanks Leigh! Glad you liked the tutorial! More to come! :)
How did you rig the mouths, was that with a pose morph as well?
Amazing tutorial!! when you make the face rigging tutorial, can you also talk about the textures and lighting used here. Its too beautiful to ignore :)
Heya EJ, Thanks so much for sharing this technique ! I have used it on a wedding animation for a couple that just got married over the WE. Check it out : https://vimeo.com/168278971
I second the mouth tutorial idea!
You bet! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial!
Paul this is great!!!!! I love the character designs and all the wood textures, so nice! Did you use the Wood Shader or is it a custom wood texture you used for this?
You have been heard! I’ll plan one soon! :)
Thanks EJ!! for the wood I tried a whole heap of different approaches and finally settled on a wood texture based of a high res photo. Thanks again for the tuts ! I also used the Pose morph to animate their facial expressions. This was my first 3D project so could not have even attempted it without the Eyedesyn resources !
Very cool! It turned out great! Thanks again for sharing and I’m glad I could help you in some small way to create this awesome work! :)
Nice as usual! can you make a quick tut about the shading for this one?
why don’t you use sweep nurbs instead of spline wrap?
You can use either, I use Spline Wrap with Capsule because I don’t have to keep matching up the Cap Rounding/Size with the Circle Spline Width.
Great tutorial. Will help me to get my DrPill animated Thank you
Thanks for watching, Erwin! Cant wait to see what you make!
