In this 2 part tutorial, I’m going to go over my workflow for how I animated this little sushi character in Cinema 4D along with some handy tips and tricks I use for my little animated GIF characters.
In Part 1, I’ll cover how I created & animated the face by using tools like Spline Shader & the Pose Morph Tag.
In Part 2, I’ll show you how I animated the sushi dude and use Deformers to add secondary animation to make our animation more dynamic, interesting, and playful.
If you have any questions, post them in the comments! Be sure to post any examples of you using this technique in your projects as well! Thanks for watching!

I love this tutorial, thanks so much! Super fun. Plus, who would ever guessed there was a stop tag haha!
Thanks Chris! Really glad you enjoyed it! I know, right? So many tags that go unloved!

thank you very much,..
Thats what I had for lunch today. I’ll take that as a sign and add it to my watch later list.
Score!
I loved this! really great tutorial, as usual. Going to go watch your cel shader tutorial now to figure out how to get my lame piece of salmon to look like your stylin’ piece of salmon…
Hello from Spain!
Congratulation for your website, i love this style of finished (some kind of cell shading i think), but i am a bit lost, i would like to understand the first step before animation, the creation of the character, modeling, materiales, finished…, my question is: For what tutorial should i start, from the creation in paper like a sketch to obtain that finished for create easy characters like the sushi?
Thanks
Hi, i agree with Nammu, in this apparently easy tut we can find lots of interesting tips. Could you possibly share this .c4d file to look into it. Thanks a lot.
Can anyone please share scene file?
I would love to take a look at and learn from the scene file and render settings for this project. I would be very grateful if you would share it.
Looks great! How do you get that sharp shadow under your character? Thanks!
quick question, probably a completely noob one but please humor me. How do you customize the timeline so you see both the keyframes and fcurve automatically? I didnt even know that was possible but it looks like it would really come in hadny
Really love your tutorials, we need more character rigging and animation tutorials. Facial animation is lacking all over the place with cinema 4d. Stay Well.
Great Tut but for some reason R17 is giving me issue when I try to add the spline to the text. The color goes blank and does not apply to model. Would appreciate any suggestions about this.
You probably need to adjust the Offset and Scale in the Spline Shader. It’s pretty finicky and all depends on the size of your actual spline object. It may be so large than you’ll need to scale it down in the Spline Shader Scale X & Y options
Is there a template for this?
What happened at 7min 04 seg?
Thanks for this tutorial!
Do you have a tutorial or could you do one and doing lip sync, with phoneme and viseme shapes?
Also, that eye light trick would be an easy way to control eye movement if you made it white on the outside and black on the inside.
In the works!
